Textbook

Abstract Algebra, 3rd Edition. by David Dummit and Richard Foote.

Learning outcomes

A student who successfully completes Algebra I + II will be able to:

  • pass the Algebra qualifying exam,
  • understand the algebraic content of a colloquium talk,
  • teach an introductory undergraduate course in abstract algebra,
  • participate in the mathematical research community, and
  • use groups, rings, and modules to solve mathematical problems.

Assessment

Your raw numerical grade will be computed as follows:

Assignments 40%
Midterm Exams 15% x 2 = 30%
Final Exam 30%

Letter grades should be interpreted as a statement about your chances of passing the qualifying exam:

A likely to pass assuming adequate preparation
B/B+ possible to pass assuming good preparation
C/C+ borderline to pass assuming exceptional preparation
other unlikely to pass under any circumstances

Assignments

There will be roughly weekly assignments which will be due at the beginning of class. You are required to typeset your assignments using e.g. LaTeX. Please leave adequate room for comments. Don't hand in your first draft. Assignments will be posted on the course website. You are responsible for checking regularly for announcements and new assignments. You are encouraged to work together on assignments, but you must write up your own solutions.

Exams

There are two midterm exams and a final exam. The midterm exams will take place instead of lecture, while the final exam is scheduled by the university registrar.

Midterm Exam 1 September 22, during class
Midterm Exam 2 October 27, during class
Final Exam December 8, 9:00 AM

Course Policies

No late assignments will be accepted. There will be no make-up exams. If you expect to miss an exam or assignment deadline for any reason, then let the instructor know as soon as possible.

Academic Integrity

The University of South Carolina has clearly articulated its policies governing academic integrity and students are encouraged to carefully review the policy on the Honor Code in the Carolina Community. Any deviation from these expectations will result in academic penalties as well as disciplinary action.

Any student with a documented disability should contact the Student Disability Resource Center to make arrangements for appropriate accommodations.
