Textbook

We will be using the free online textbook Calculus Volume 2 from OpenStax. (The "official" textbook Thomas' Calculus is optional.)

Learning outcomes

A student who successfully completes Calculus II (Math 142) should continue to:

  • Develop as an independent learner with the ability to approach problems from a conceptual viewpoint.
  • Utilize more than one idea in a single problem, and to apply appropriate calculus skills to problems in context.
  • Master concepts and gain skills needed to solve problems related to techniques of integration, sequences and series, Taylor polynomials and series, parametric and polar coordinate curves.

Assessment

Your raw numerical grade will be computed as follows:

Online Homework 10%
Gateways 10%
Quizzes 10%
Midterms 15% ⨉ 3 = 45%
Final Exam 25%

You are guaranteed, at least, the letter grade indicated by the following table:

A B+ B C+ C D+ D
≥90 ≥85 ≥80 ≥75 ≥70 ≥65 ≥60

The table may be revised later (to your benefit) at the instructor's discretion.

Online Homework

There will be regular online homework assignments posted almost every lecture and due a week later. The assignments should be completed through the WebWork system, which will be explained by your TA in the labs. Your lowest 4 online homework grades are dropped. Students are responsible for checking regularly to view new assignments.

Gateway Exams

There will be two gateway tests during the semester. The first test (Gateway 1) covers limits and derivatives and the second test (Gateway 2) covers integration techniques. Your TA will explain the process during lab. In order to pass the gateway test, you must correctly answer all but one of the total six problems. Each gateway either counts for 5 points or 0 points of your final grade; there is no partial credit.

Quizzes

There will be frequent quizzes during lab and recitation sections. Your lowest quiz grade is dropped.

Exams

There are two midterm exams and a final exam. The midterm exams will take place instead of lecture, while the final exam will take place at the time below in the regular lecture room.

Midterm Exam 1 February 10, during class
Midterm Exam 2 March 17, during class
Midterm Exam 3 April 7, during class
Final Exam May 3, 9:00 am - 11:30 pm

Course Policies

There will be no make-up exams or quizzes. If you expect to miss a quiz or exam for any reason, then let the instructor know as soon as possible. In the case of an excused absence from a midterm exam, the other exam grades will be used for the missed exam (possibly adjusted to account for differences in the difficulty).

It is not reasonable to expect to learn the material without regularly attending classes. However, no attendance policy will be enforced.

Academic Integrity

The University of South Carolina has clearly articulated its policies governing academic integrity and students are encouraged to carefully review the policy on the Honor Code in the Carolina Community. Any deviation from these expectations will result in academic penalties as well as disciplinary action.
