Midterm 3 Information

November 8

Midterm 3 will take place during the scheduled class period on Friday, November 15, 2024.

The exam is 50 minutes long. No notes, books, computers, phones, calculators or other aids are allowed. Full credit will not be awarded for insufficient accompanying work.

The midterm will focus on the following sections from the text:

  • 10 Equivalence Relations; Cosets
  • 11 Counting the Elements of a Finite Group
  • 12 Homomorphisms
  • 13 Homomorphisms and Normal Subgroups
  • 14 Direct Products and Finite Abelian Groups

Our discussion was occasionally more superficial than earlier sections. Specfically, I will not ask about:

  • Fermat’s Theorem
  • The Class Equation
  • The Second Isomorphism Theorem
  • The Third Isomorphism Theorem
  • Direct Product Recognition (Theorem 14.1)
  • Details from the proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Finite Abelian Groups

You are expected to know all the material from prerequisite math courses and Midterms 1 and 2.

Three practice exams have been posted in the resources section, which have similar length, difficulty, and format to your exam.

Asynchronous Lecture 2

October 28

Class is asynchronous today. Office hours are cancelled for Monday and Tuesday of this week. If you cannot make Wednesday’s office hours, then email me and I may be able to make an appointment at another time.

A lecture on dihedral groups is here. A “bonus” lecture on polyhedral groups is here. Finally you know why I gave you bags of dice on the first day of class!
